What’s New?

The 2007 bullfrog season has gotten underway very slowly due to persistently cloudy/windy weather and cool temperatures. The bullfrogs began to emerge in Florence Lake around the end of April, but weren’t turning up in any numbers until the second week of May. By early May I was beginning to get reports of bullfrog sightings from all over Greater Victoria.

The eradication process will begin again this year in Langford, but I will try to expand the program geographically as quickly as I can. I am also planning to run experiments on a new set of trap designs and I would like to do this in Saanich where the populations have been established for longer and consequently there is a higher proportion of large adults in the populations.

The photo below is of a five-legged juvenile bullfrog collected from Langford Lake on May 17, 2007. It has only one toe on its spare leg.
